El Valle de Ayora
This region lies in the SW corner of the province of Valencia, bordering on
Albacete. The Cantabán river is the central axis of the valley up to
where it converges with the Xuquer and Cabriel rivers. This is a rocky region
with mountains over 1,000 meters high. Being a border area it has a string of
castles which defended the Kingdom of Valencia in the past.
Interesting Spots:
Cortes de Pallás reservours, and Chirel Castle.
Cofrentes, town perched on a volcanic outcrop.
Jalance's ruined castle, and Don Juan cave, now re-opened for tourists.
Ayora
Ayora is the main town in the area. Visit its ruined castle, medieval district,
13th century-built Iglesia de San Blas, ruins of the Iberian city (4th-1st
centuries B.C.), and the cave paintings in Tortosilla.
